Kos or Cos beeing a party island amongst the Greek islands
Kos, or otherwise known as Cos, is a Greek island next to the Gulf of Cos. It is home to about 30,000 inhabitants- and is only 4 kilometers from the shores of Turkey. Many ruins litter the island- making it a wonderful historical visit, while other attractions make it great for a family trip as well.
The island is home to some great sights of mountains- of which have been split thanks to earthquakes that plagues the area. Completing the view is the large amounts of beach land that make the island so attractable to vacationers. The vast amounts of land that have grown to become popular among tourists have led the island to center its economy based on tourism. However, there are many types of farming operations in place that make up the economy as well. For instance; grapes, olives, figs, cos lettuce, corn, wheat, and tomatoes are very abundant in the region.
The main port of Kos is heavily populated, and is a great tourist spot. Many types of hotels, restaurants, and bars exist. In fact, there is a "bar street" that is full of bars for many tourists to enjoy. Guarding the entrance of Kos is the fortress built by St. John. This enormous structure is yet another historical site of Kos that is a great treat to view in person. Other types of ruins include agora ruins- which are a another treat to look at and wonder about the origins of such sites.
Kos is the site of many famous births. For instance, it is believed that Hippocrates was born in the region. In fact, the center of town holds the Plane Tree of Hippocrates, and a dream temple where he was supposedly a teacher at. A Hippocratic Museum is also in existence, which is dedicated to the life of Hippocrates. Ben Needham was also born in Kos, which is the famous case of a child that went missing. The case brought attention of mass media, and even today support is given to find the child- years later. The child was only 21 months old when the abduction took place, and sadly, no one has found the toddler yet. It is believed that he has either become abducted, or had drowned in an unfortunate swimming accident when his grandparents were not watching. Since 1991, the search has continued without success- although hopes are still high.
